Examination of the Relationship between School Alienation and School Burnout among Secondary School Students

Abstract

In this study, the relationship between school alienation and school burnout among secondary students and variations of these two variables according to gender, grade level, family togetherness, family income level and mother's working status was examined. The sample of the research is composed of 884 randomly selected students from 223.945 middle school students who are educated in the central districts of Ankara in 2015-2016 academic year. It was found that male students' alienation levels were higher than female students’ and alienation levels of the students whose mothers did not work were higher than those whose mothers worked. On the other hand, it was found that male students’ school burnout levels were found to be higher than female students and burnout levels of the students from broken homes were higher than those whose parents were together. It was observed that school alienation and school burnout increased as the class level increased. It was seen that the levels of school alienation and school burnout did not differ according to the income levels of the families. There was a significant relationship between student alienation and school burnout levels of the students, and school burnout was found to be a significant predictor of school alienation.
