Nüfus Dinamiklerinin Ekonomik Büyümeye Etkisi: OECD Ülkelerinden Kanıtlar ve Türkiye İçin Çıkarımlar

Abstract

Ulusların büyüme ve kalkınma süreçlerinde nüfusun nasıl bir yere sahip olduğu konusu ekonomistler tarafından uzun süredir tartışılmaktadır. Gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ekonomilerin politikalarında nüfus önemli bir faktördür ve büyüme ile ilişkisi sıklıkla incelenmektedir. Bölgesel politikaların rasyonel şekilde oluşturulması, kaynakların daha etkin kullanılması için belirleyici bir faktör olan nüfus yapısının iyi analiz edilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu çalışma OECD ülkelerinde nüfus dinamiklerinin ekonomik büyümeye etkisini analiz etmeyi ve bu eksende Türkiye için çıkarımlar yapmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma 2003-2022 dönemini ve 38 OECD ülkesini kapsamaktadır. Elde edilen ampirik kanıtlar panel veri analiz yöntemine dayanmaktadır. Bu süreçte model tahmini için Arellano-Bond iki aşamalı genelleştirilmiş momentler yöntemi (GMM) kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonucunda; OECD ülkelerinde toplam nüfus içinde hem çalışma çağındaki nüfus hem de yaşlı nüfus oranındaki artışın büyümeyi pozitif etkilediği tespit edilmiştir. Bulgular doğuşta beklenen yaşam süresi ve nüfus artışı değişkenlerinin de büyümeyi pozitif etkilediğini göstermektedir. Ayrıca çalışma bulguları Türkiye’de etkin bir nüfus planlaması yapılması gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır.

The Effect of Population Dynamics on Economic Growth: Evidence from OECD Countries and Implications for Türkiye

Abstract

The role of population in the growth and development processes of nations has long been debated by economists. Population is an important factor in the policies of both developed and developing economies, and its relationship with growth is frequently analyzed. A comprehensive analysis of the population structure, which is a determining factor for the rational formulation of regional policies and the more efficient use of resources, is essential. This study aims to analyze the impact of population dynamics on economic growth in OECD countries and to make inferences for Türkiye on this axis. The study covers the period 2003-2022 and 38 OECD countries. The empirical evidence obtained in the study is based on panel data analysis method. In this process, the Arellano -Bond two-stage generalized method of moments (GMM) is used for model estimation. Because of the study, it is found that the increase in both the working age population and the elderly population within the total population in OECD countries positively affects growth. The findings suggest that life expectancy at birth and population growth variables also have a positive effect on growth. In addition, the findings of the study reveal that effective population planning should be carried out in Türkiye.
