Political Issues Regarding the Toponym Translations

Abstract

In this article, we analyse the toponymy and double designations of the holy places of Jerusalem, which are rooted in two religious cultures and whose translation is as delicate as that of political notions. By toponymy, we mean the study of the various meanings of the designations of places. Toponyms reflect the various political contexts in which they emerge. In the context of translation studies, translators are generally expected to translate the message as it appears in the source text. But is this always possible when we consider the non-linguistic and cultural characteristics of the texts? Toponyms are always linked to a particular context; therefore, whether they aim at political actions or not, these are transmitters of ideologies. Therefore, in the discourse, these toponyms also give information about the different meanings that their users ascribe to them.

YER ADLARININ ÇEVİRİSİNDE SİYASİ SORUNLAR

Abstract

Bu makalede, yer adı bilimi (fr.toponimie) ile kökleri iki dinî kültüre dayanan ve çevirisi siyasi kavramlarınki kadar hassas olan, Kudüs'teki kutsal yerlerin çift adlandırmalarının analizine yer verilmiştir. Burada yer adı bilimi ile kastedilen, yer adlandırmalarının farklı göstergesel anlamları bağlamında incelenmesidir. Yer adları, içinde var oldukları farklı siyasi bağlamların yansımasıdır. Konuya çeviribilimsel açıdan yaklaşıldığında -genellikle- çevirmenlerin, mesajı kaynak metindeki şekliyle aktarmaları beklenmektedir. Peki, çevrilecek ögelerin dil dışı ve kültürel özellikleri göz önünde bulundurulduğunda bu durum her zaman mümkün müdür? Yer adları her zaman için belirli bir bağlam ile ilintilidir; dolayısıyla bu yer adları, siyasi eylemlere yönelik olsun veya olmasın, bir düşünce ve inançlar bütünü olan ideolojilerin aktarıcısı olma özelliğine sahiptir. Dolayısıyla söylem içerisinde bu yer adları, kullanıcılarının onlara atfettiği farklı anlamlar hakkında da bilgi vermiş olmaktadır. Bu çalışma, entelektüel modeller ile bireylerin ve kültürlerin iletişim sürecinde kendini gösteren ideolojilerin aktarımına doğrudan katkı sağlayan, medyada geçen kutsal yer adlarının imaj ve söylemsel kimliğini çeviribilim perspektifinden incelemeyi amaç edinmektedir.
