The study aimed to examine how gender stereotypes of parents with children aged between 3 and 6 years and from different socioeconomic backgrounds and their views about toys and play materials affect toy selection. This study used a descriptive survey research design to explore parents’ views on their children’s toy selection. The population consisted of parents of children who were attending nine kindergartens in the central district of Çankırı in the 2019-2020 academic year. The sample consisted of parents of 128 children aged between 3 and 6 years (65 girls and 63 boys). A “Personal Information Form” and a “Parents’ Toy Preferences Form” developed by the researchers were used in the data collection. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews with parents who volunteered to participate in the study. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 20. The data were analysed using the chi-square statistic and stepwise regression. Parents choose toys for their children, taking into account children’s developmental characteristics and wishes and the price and quality of toys. Additionally, when choosing toys, they preferred to buy toys that are considered appropriate for their children’s sex. Families choose toys for their children, taking into consideration many issues. The study found that parents most often allow their children to play with toys that are considered to be specific to their sex. Based on these results, parents are recommended to choose toys that are suitable not only for their children’s sex but also for both sexes when buying toys for their children because children learn life through games and toys.
