İSKOÇYA’DA KAPİTALİZM ve GECİKEN MİLLİYETÇİLİK

Abstract

İngiltere’nin ve Avrupa ülkelerinin tarihsel dönüşümlerinden ilham alan teorik metinler genel itibariyle kapitalistleşme süreciyle milliyetçilik anlatılarının yükselişi arasında doğrusal bir bağ kurmaktadır. Bu çalışma İskoçya’nın 17. ve 18. yüzyıldaki tarihsel dönüşümüne odaklanarak ülkenin bu bağ karşısındaki özgün konumunu anlamlandırmayı hedeflemektedir. Bu anlamda Tom Nairn’in İskoçya’da milliyetçiliğin ketlenmesine dair yorumlarından yola çıkılarak bu ketlenmenin İskoçya’nın kapitalistleşme sürecindeki sebepleri ve sonuçları araştırılmıştır. Tartışmanın seyrinde ilk olarak İskoç modernleşmesinde Calvinci kilisenin etkisine ve Wallerstein’ın dünya sistemleri analizine yönelik bir tartışma yürütülerek İskoç milliyetçiliğinin kapitalistleşme sürecindeki ketlenmesi açıklanmıştır. Ardından dünya sistemleri analizindeki sınıf, kültür ve jeopolitika ilişkisinden hareketle İskoçya’daki sınıfsal dönüşüm ve İskoç kimliğinin inşasına odaklanılarak kapitalistleşme ve milliyetçilik süreçleri arasındaki tezatlığın kökenleri sorgulanmıştır.

CAPITALISM and BELATED NATIONALISM in SCOTLAND

Abstract

Inspired by the historical transformations of England and European countries, theoretical studies generally create a parallel link between the capitalization process and the rise of nationalist narratives. This study focuses on the historical transformation of Scotland in the 17th and 18th centuries and aims to understand the country's unique position in this connection. In this regard, based on Tom Nairn's analysis on the inhibition of nationalism in Scotland, the causes and consequences of this inhibition in the capitalization process of Scotland were investigated. In the course of the discussion, firstly, the inhibition of Scottish nationalism in the capitalization process was explained by conducting a discussion on the influence of the Calvinist church on Scottish modernization and Wallerstein's analysis of world-systems analysis. Then, from the point of the relationship between class, culture, and geopolitics in world-systems analysis, the origins of the contradiction between the processes of capitalization and nationalism were questioned by focusing on the class transformation in Scotland and the construction of the Scottish identity.
