Contributions of Professional Development Activities to Teachers of English

Abstract

Today, it is essential that English language teachers develop themselves professionally in order to perform their job effectively. The purpose of this study is to explore how the teachers of English develop themselves professionally and the contributions of their professional development activities. Data was collected through the Survey of Professional Development Analysis which was specifically developed by the researcher. In the research, a survey model was used and a scope of 148 randomly chosen teachers of English working at elementary schools in Kayseri. The data obtained from the questionnaire, developed by the researcher, were analyzed descriptively, and the results revealed that the participants, to a great extend, do not participate in professional development activities, and they state that they are not supported and encouraged by the authorities appropriately. Furthermore, they admit that they need to develop themselves professionally so that they can teach effectively in EFL classes.

Mesleki Gelişim Etkinliklerinin İngilizce Öğretmenlerine Olan Katkısı

Abstract

Günümüzde İngilizce öğretmenlerinin kendilerini mesleki açıdan geliştirmeleri İngilizceyi etkin bir şekilde öğretebilmek için önemli kabul edilmektedir. Bu çalışma İngilizce öğretmenlerinin mesleki gelişim açısından neler yaptıklarını ve katıldıkları mesleki gelişim faaliyetlerinin mesleklerine olan katkısını ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Araştırma öğretmenlerin durumunu belirlemeye yönelik ve tarama modeline uygun olarak yapılan nicel bir araştırmadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacı tarafından Mesleki Gelişim Analizi Anketi kullanılmıştır Araştırmanın çalışma evrenini 2012 yılında Kayseri’de ilk ve ortaöğretimde görev yapan ve tesadüfü örneklem yöntemiyle seçilen 148 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Verilerin analizi sonucunda İngilizce öğretmenlerinin mesleki gelişim faaliyetlerine çok katılmadıkları, bu konuda kendilerinin yeterince desteklenmediği, alan öğretimi konusunda mesleki gelişime ihtiyaç duydukları görülmüştür. Bu çalışmada ayrıca İngilizce öğretmenlerinin mesleki gelişim açısından neler yapabilecekleri konusunda önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
