Abstract
A work of literature based on any historical period is a way of re-interpreting and re-establishing that era by depending upon the information about the case with that era’s paradigm, ideology and point of view. At this point, the subject of Kösem Sultan which has been used many times at various works of literature, falls into the class of historical literature. Among these works, the best and the eldest example of is the historical play named Kösem Sultan, which was written by Şahabeddin Süleyman and Tahsin Nahid together. This play, which was written during the period of Second Constitution, is a successful historical work that meets the expectations of that period with its fiction; because the oppression, corruption and denouncements imposed during the reign of Abdülhamid the Second, forms the subjects of majority of the plays written in the period of Second Constitution. Therefore the historical plays of that period has become a rostrum which cannot reach the individuals with the expected lyrism of a literary work. Since the effects of those historical plays were very short on the audience and the readers, only the Kösem Sultan and the Selim the Third have been accepted as successful works that meet the expectations and therefore have had their effects on the subject audience for a long time.

Herhangi bir tarihî dönemi konu alan edebî eser, yazıldığı devrin paradigması, ideolojisi ve bakış açısıyla konu edindiği vaka hakkında edinilen malumat ve bilgilere dayanarak, tarihi yeniden yorumlama ve kurmadır. Bu noktada tarihi bir şahsiyet olan Kösem Sultan’ın Türk edebiyatı tarihi içinde edebi eserlerdeki bir hayli fazla ve çeşitli olan görünümleri tarihi konu alan edebi eserler sınıfına girer. Bu eserlerin bilinen en iyi ve eski örneği Şahabeddin Süleyman ve Tahsin Nahid’in müştereken kaleme aldığı Kösem Sultan adlı tarihi piyesidir. II. Meşrutiyet döneminde kaleme alınan bu eser, hem kurgusu hem de mevcut dönemdeki beklentileri karşılayan konusuyla başarılı bir tarihi piyestir; çünkü II. Meşrutiyet döneminde kaleme alınan tarihi piyeslerin büyük bir kısmının konusunu bir önceki dönem olan II. Abdülhamid devrinin baskısı, yolsuzlukları ve jurnalleri oluşturur. Hal böyle olunca da mevcut dönemdeki tarihi piyesler bir edebi eserden beklenen lirizmi ve bireyi yakalayamayan birer hitabet kürsüsü haline gelir. İşte gerek izleyici gerekse okuyucu üzerinde etkisi kısa süren bu tarihi piyeslerin içinde sadece Kösem Sultan ve Selim-i Sâlis beklentileri karşılayacak derecede başarılı bulunduğundan bahsi geçen kitleler üzerinde etkisini uzun süre devam ettirmiştir.
