Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to examine the demographic changes along with the spatial change and development occurring around the Izmir Metro system and to examine the place of planning practice. In this context, the plan amendments made within the 1000-meter impact area of the metro line and the demographic and environmental effects created in the whole city were examined and the relationship between them and the construction of the metro line was analyzed. As a result of the analysis and research, it was found that the metro line did not have a significant effect on the population and density changes in the neighborhoods, no significant changes occurred except for the Kazımdirik district, and the plan amendments continued on individual demands and that comprehensive changes did not occur. A statistically significant relationship at 0.10 level was found between the accessibility of the neighborhoods to metro stations and the plan amendments. In order for rail systems to cause meaningful changes in space, the integration and coordination of planning and transportation practices are extremely important. One of the important results of the study is that the level of the relationship between planning and transportation practices is directly related to the meaningful, feasible and plannable effects of transportation investments on space. This study is part of the master thesis conducted by Dokuz Eylul University the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences and was presented in the International Symposium on Social Sciences and Educational Sciences (USVES).
