Göstergebilimsel Bir Çözümleme: Forsa Öyküsü

Year 2025, Issue: 19, 1052 - 1081, 30.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.47994/usbad.1759219

Abstract

A Semiotical Analysis: The Story of Forsa

Year 2025, Issue: 19, 1052 - 1081, 30.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.47994/usbad.1759219

Abstract

This study, which conducts a semiotic analysis of Ömer Seyfettin's short story "Forsa" within a literary framework, demonstrates that the story not only liberates individuals but also reconstructs national identity, faith, and memory through storytelling. While the surface structure of the story appears at first glance to be a development along the axis of captivity and freedom, a deeper structure reveals that the story develops along the axis of identity, hope, and loyalty. As the main character undergoes transformations, spatial and temporal elements become crucial components supporting the story's dramatic structure. Spatial dimensions reflect the main character's psychological journey from entrapment to freedom. Time in the story is not linear but cyclical, or rather, like a dream, a "dream time" that ends a forty-year wait. In this semiotic analysis, conducted using Greimas's actant model, Kara Memiş turns to the object of "freedom" as the subject, while "homeland longing" emerges as the sender. While the facilitators (faith, dreams, the Turkish navy) facilitate this journey, the antagonists (old age, captivity, time) appear to complicate it. This outcome has led to a transformation affecting both individuals and groups. In conclusion, this
study demonstrates that Forsa, space, and time function in literary stories at both superficial and deep layers of meaning.
