Turkish adaptation of the sport motivation scale II (SMS-II): Procedures of validity and reliability

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was put forward the procedures related with the adaption of the Sport Motivation Scale II (SMS-II) developed by Pelletier et.al (2013) into the Turkish Culture. Validation and reliability analysis were also conducted for the scale that consists of 18 items in 6 main factors.

Material and Methods: The Scale was applied (78 female and 127 male) 205 athletes from 14 sports branches. A number of factors and correlations of items were tested with Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) with principal component and oblique rotation method suggested for simplifying the structure of predetermined factors. That model was tested with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in AMOS 18 according to the criterion of fit indices given in the literature.

Results: Total scale explains the 66% of total variances. Factors loadings vary from 0.57 to 0.94. Cronbach's alpha for the total scale was found 0.76 and 0.72 for intrinsic, 0.61 for integrated, 0.81 for identified, 0.55 for introjected, 0.73 for external, 0.72 for amotivated. Correlation between factors varies from low (0.14) to high (0.69). CFA results provides the fit indices as X²=181.3, df=120, X²/df=1.5, RMSA= 0.05, CFI=0.96, NFI=0.88, NNFI=0.96 with 18 items and 6 factors.

Conclusion: The fit indexes of the scale are an acceptable level. There is a strong correlation between the results of this study and the result of original scale developed by Pelletier et.al (2013). Results show that Turkish version of Sport Motivation Scale II is conceptually and structurally valid and reliable measurement for Turkish athletes.
