Revascularization and Orthopedic Treatment of A Child With Popliteal Artery Injury and Femur Fracture Resulting From Shotgun Trauma

Abstract

Complex lower limb vascular injuries in high-energy penetrating traumas are associated with an unacceptably high incidence of complications including amputation. Popliteal arterial trauma carries the greatest risk of limb loss of any peripheral vascular injury. Open repair of arterial injuries in young children often leads to less satisfactory outcomes. Herein we report the case of a five-year-old boy who was admitted to the hospital with lower extremity shotgun injury including bone fracture, arterial and venous trauma. Popliteal artery and popliteal vein graft interposition were done using right saphenous vein after fixation of the fracture. Faciotomy was performed for relief of compartment syndrome and tissue defect was closed.
