The Role of H-FABP at Emergency Department for Early Detection of Cardiac Damage in Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Abstract

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning leads to cardiac damage by causing tissue hypoxia. Some electrocardiographic changes and biochemical indicators were reported in cardiac damage occurring due to CO poisoning. In this study, it is aimed to reveal whether or not Human Fatty Acid Binding Protein (H-FABP) provides an advantage for diagnosing cardiac damage depending on CO poisoning in early phase. Carboxi-hemoglobin (COHb) levels, electrocardiographic (ECG) changes, creatinine kinase, creatinine kinase myoglobin, troponin I and H-FABP levels were investigated in blood gas of 60 patients admitted to Emergency Department and diagnosed as having CO poisoning. Median COHb levels of the patients were determined as 21.8 ( min-max=7.3-42.7). Negative T wave in ECG of 24 patients and ST segment eleva-tion in ECG of 1 patient were detected. Cardiac biochemical indicators and H-FABP levels of the patient with ST segment elevation were positive. In this study, sufficient data were not obtained to conclude that whether or not H-FABP provides an advantage in early period for diagnosing cardiac damage resulted from CO poisoning.
