Relationship Between Multidetector Computed Tomography Coronary Calcium Scoring and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness

Relationship Between Multidetector Computed Tomography Coronary Calcium Scoring and Carotid Intima-Media Thickness

Abstract

The purpose of our study is to investigate the relationship between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) -an indicator of systemic atherosclerotic changes in early phases and coronary calcium score- an indicator of coronary artery disease (CAD) measured by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). 100 patients, aging between 18-65 years, whom had clinical indications for MDCT coronary angiography examination were included in the study. Coronary calcium scores (CCS) were measured by MDCT. Demographic features of patients were recorded. Intima-media thickness of both common carotid arteries was measured, mean CIMT was calculated and presence of carotid plaques were looked for using B-mod ultrasound. CCS:0 and CCS>0 subjects were determined with coronary calcium scoring. CCS>0 subjects were divided into CCS: 0-10, 11-100, 101-400 and >400 groups. CCS of 56 patient was 0 and 39 patient was higher than 0. Statistically significant difference between CCS and CIMT was determined (p<0,001). Also significant difference regarding presence of carotid plaques between CCS=0 and >0 groups was observed (p<0,05). In conclusion, CIMT measurement with ultrasonography is a non-invasive, easily performed and cheap diagnostic tool for early detection of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk assessment.
