The Analysis of Reverse Flow Digital Artery Island Flap Performed in 22 Cases for Pulp Reconstruction

Abstract

Providing the sensorial paddy structures of the pulp is essential in order to preserve the functional capacity of the hand in pulp reconstruction. The reconstruction of distally located fingertip defects exposing underlying anatomic structures such as bone, tendon or joint, is challenging. There are numerous surgical techniques in the literature for pulp reconstruction. The reverse flow digital artery island flap is superior to other techniques from the aspect of cosmetic flap quality, minimal donor site morbidity, providing a sensorial paddy pulp. In our study, %81.8 of our patients had normal results from Semmes-Weinstein test and %95.4 of our patients had good or moderate results from 2 point discrimination test. The reverse flow digital artery island flap is author`s first choice flap for moderate to large pulp defects due to its capacity for reconstructing the pulp most ideally, high sensory recovery and minimal donor site morbidity.
