Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Adrenal Insuffıciency
Abstract
Symptoms in primary adrenal insufficiency depend on glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid deficiency. Because the symptoms are nonspecific, the diagnosis is often delayed and patients may present with adrenal crisis. The appropriate dose of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid replacement should be performed. The goal of treatment of patients with primary adrenal insufficiency is to restore normal well-being, stable weight, normal sexual function, and physical activity. Patients with primary adrenal insufficiency are at risk of life-threatening adrenal crises. For this reason, in cases of stress such as surgery, trauma and infections, glucocorticoid doses should be increased and the patients should be informed about the circumstances in which they will increase the dose. In follow-up, evaluation of clinical findings in terms of under or overtreatment is important. For this reason, it is recommended that these patients must be followed up at experienced centers.
