The Grand Mosque Tradition in Anatolia: Its Role as a Spatial and Societal Center During the Seljuk, Beylik, and Ottoman Periods

Abstract

Grand Mosques represent one of the most prominent architectural and sociocultural elements of the Islamic urban tradition. Constructed throughout the Seljuk, Beylik, and Ottoman periods in Anatolia, these structures functioned not merely as places of worship but also as administrative, economic, and cultural centers of cities. They were typically situated at a topographically central point within the urban fabric, around which public buildings such as bazaars, inns (hans), madrasas, baths, and markets were established. This spatial organization positioned the mosque as the nucleus of urban planning, strengthening both religious life and social cohesion. From an architectural perspective, Grand Mosques embody the artistic sensibility, stone craftsmanship, and structural innovations of their respective eras. The Grand Mosques of Bursa, Diyarbakır, Konya, and Sivas, for instance, vividly reflect the political authority, aesthetic preferences, and regional identity of different historical periods. Moreover, these mosques serve as “sites of collective memory,” representing the shared heritage of their communities. Practices such as the delivery of sermons, public announcements, and communal consultations reinforced the mosque’s central role in social communication. In the Islamic urban model, Grand Mosques should be regarded not only as religious edifices but also as intersections of politics, economy, education, and culture. This perspective reveals that religious and worldly life in Islamic cities were perceived as complementary dimensions of a unified whole. Thus, Grand Mosques stand as enduring symbols of a civilizational continuity that integrates architectural heritage with urban identity.
