About

Yazmabilim: Journal of Manuscript Studies is an academic, peer-reviewed, open-access, thematic journal that began publishing in 2025 under the auspices of the FSMVU Center for Manuscript Studies. It publishes original research on Islamicate manuscripts, as well as written and printed book culture and history.

Yazmabilim: Journal of Manuscript Studies is the first and only periodical publication in Turkey in its field. The title of the journal has been chosen to reflect not only its uniqeness but also its scope. The term "Yazmabilim" as a title has been selected with the intention of it becoming a Turkish term adopted for use, like the Arabic and English counterparts “'ilm al-makhtūtāt” and “codicology.” While “Yazmabilim” encompasses the concepts of “'ilm al-makhtūtāt” and “codicology,” it has been proposed with a meaning that can also correspond to the terms “manuscriptology” or “manuscript studies.”

Yazmabilim: Journal of Manuscript Studies aims to present the scholarly contributions of manuscripts within a broader framework by examining them primarily from the perspectives of language, literature, logic, Islamic studies, history, history of religions, ethics and politics, philosophy, and the history of science. This focus aligns closely with the research areas of the FSMVU Center for Manuscript Studies. Studies on collector’s items and collections will be included in the journal’s scope of publication.

Given that the manuscript studies entered into the process of becoming a discipline of its own, Yazmabilim: Journal of Manuscript Studies aims to contribute to this process as a thematic and periodical publication. It also aspires to become a source for shaping scholarly discourse while meeting the required academic standards and to have a remarkable impact on an international level, within the shortest possible time.

The journal, which is planned to be published biannually (on March and September), features articles, research notes, book reviews, and interviews that address not only the codicological and paratextual features of manuscripts, but also written and printed works, as well as manuscript and rare book collections, within the context of book culture and history.

The journal accepts submissions in Turkish, Arabic, and English.
