UNDERSTANDING DIGITAL DEMENTIA: INSIGHTS FROM SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW AND TOPIC MODELING

Abstract

This study investigates "digital dementia," which becomes an important concern recently. To better understand how this phenomenon has been examined so far, we combined a systematic literature review (SLR) with computational text analysis. The SLR, carried out using Scopus and Web of Science, resulted in 13 relevant publications that outline the main symptoms associated with digital dementia, discuss potential underlying causes, and consider broader societal effects. To complement these findings, we applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to the collected texts, which revealed three recurring thematic areas: (1) cognitive and neurological outcomes related to digital device use, (2) interactions between humans and AI systems, including tendencies toward anthropomorphism, and (3) the role of digital platforms in educational and community settings. Visual analyses, such as keyword heatmaps and co-occurrence networks, helped clarify how these topics cluster within the existing literature. Overall, the study identifies several underexplored areas. By outlining these gaps, we aim to support future research directions and contribute to discussions on educational practices and the responsible development of digital technologies that promote cognitive health.
