AN EXAMINATION ON USING THE KÜRDÎ MODE IN TURKISH POP MUSIC

Abstract

ABSTRACT Turkish pop music is one of the popular music genres in Turkey, alongside rap, hip-hop, rock, and arabesque, and it remains among the most frequently listened-to genres today. Among the modes used in Turkish pop music, alongside Nihavend and hicaz, the kürdî mode is also commonly employed. This study aims to explain the characteristic features of the kürdî mode, its place in Turkish music, and how it is used in contemporary Turkish pop music. The primary objective of this study is to identify the similarities and differences in the application of the kürdî mode within Turkish pop music, while also revealing its relationship with arabesque music. The research addresses topics such as the “arabesquization” of Turkish pop music throughout its historical development and how the kürdî mode has been used in ways that diverge from its traditional description in classical Turkish music theory. Descriptive analysis and musical analysis methods were utilized in the study. Furthermore, through a purposive sampling approach, ten pieces selected from the Turkish pop music repertoire were analyzed both theoretically and aurally, focusing on modal features such as scales, modulations, and frequency of notes, by examining official videos published on YouTube. As a result of these analyses, it was determined that, in addition to differences from the perspective of Turkish music theory, the use of the kürdî mode in Turkish pop music also exhibits variations in terms of orchestration and timbre. Observations made in the analyzed songs indicate that the kürdî mode has been simplified compared to its classical Turkish music counterpart and is often employed within an arabesque framework. Ultimately, this research concludes that an approach to the kürdî mode that incorporates arabesque motifs is widely used in Turkish pop music, alongside genres such as Turkish rock and rap.
