INTEGRATION OF MODES INTO WESTERN MUSIC CULTURE AND EDUCATION: CULTURAL FUSION IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

Abstract

The purpose of this study investigates the interaction and integration of microtonal mode systems with Western music regarding music composition, musical creativity, and music education. The integration and transfer of the microtonal and mode systems used in the Middle East, South Asia, and Turkey to the 12 equal temperament systems widely used in Western music is of great importance in terms of interaction between different musical cultures and music education. In this context, the study explains how the modes can be incorporated into Western music within the framework of melodic, harmonic, and modal changes. In addition, it was concluded that modal and microtonal intervals and specific modal structures not only led to new trends in Western music but also contributed to students and the education system in terms of music education. The data obtained from the research show that the use of modes and microtonal structures in the field of music theory in Western music curricula enables students to identify different cultural musical forms and increases their level of musical flexibility and creativity. Using the descriptive method, this research examined Western theory books and piece notations that included microtonal and mode systems and analyzed the techniques applied in these works. In addition, by examining the scientific publications in the literature, suggestions were made regarding the transfer of tonal and microtonal polyphonic variations, which is one of the sub-problems of the study. In light of the findings obtained from this study, it has been determined that the interaction established with microtonal and mode systems supports Western music with an enriching expression.
