GLOTTAL PATTERNS IN VOICE PERFORMANCE IN SİLİFKE REGION: THE EXAMPLE OF SILIFKE FOLKLORE TEAM
Abstract
The Silifke region is significant in Anatolia due to its rich folklore. The folk songs and dance figures in its repertoire embody the distinctive and characteristic elements of the region’s music. In Silifke, where the nomadic Turkmen lifestyle has influenced cultural elements, the rhythmic features of dances performed alongside folk songs are particularly noteworthy. This characteristic contributes to the rapid and fluid glottal in the performance of Silifke folk songs. Glottal Techniques are one of the most prominent concepts reflecting the regional and local nature of folk music vocal performance. In traditional vocal performance, glottal techniques are described using terms such as soft, moderate, or harsh and is known to refer to throat sounds within a piece. It has been considered that identifying these throat sounds in musical notation may help reveal the specific patterns and musical elements shaping usage of glottal techniques in this region. In addition, the study is important as it can be a reference source for researchers in the field of traditional voice education. Therefore, the metered melodies included in the 1994 album Turkish Folklore Music, recorded by the Silifke Folklore Ensemble, which is also listed as a source in the TRT Repertoire, were analyzed. The study identified the patterns performed with glottal in these pieces. Document analysis method was used in this qualitative study. As a result, it was found that glottal patterns primarily consist of stepwise descending notes, often moving down by one or two adjacent scale degrees, forming similar motifs and phrases. Furthermore, it was concluded that the trill and stepwise ascending and descending notes within a second interval were executed using glottal techniques.
