ERIC LEDEUIL-X NIRY S: OPINIONS FROM THE COMPOSER OF THE MUSIC AND STUDY SUGGESTIONS ON CONTEMPORARY PERIOD PLAYING TECHNIQUES IN THE WORK

Abstract

ABSTRACT Flutist, composer, flute instructor Eric Ledeuil's piece X niry S is the letters of Claude Debussy's Syrinx written backwards. The name X niry S emerged when he discovered that the effect of the first sentence coincidentally resembled the theme of Syrinx and was heard backwards. Beginning-level flutists' mastery of contemporary techniques greatly benefits their development. However, the lack of sufficient works written for beginner flutists from this period keeps flutists in the early years of their instrument training away from contemporary music. Eric Ledeuil is able to closely follow the needs of beginning-level flutists as he continues his careers as a composer, flutist and educator. From this perspective, he leaves valuable works for flute pedagogy in contemporary flute literature. In this study, Syrinx, which inspired the piece X niry S, will be examined in the first section. The study will be enriched with topics such as the composer's thoughts on the work, the reason and source of inspiration for its composition, the person to whom it was dedicated, and the effect he wanted to create on those who play it. In the second part, the contemporary flute techniques used in X niry S will be explained, and a study guide will be prepared that will provide ease of reading and studying for practicing flutists, even without the help of an instructor. It is intended to be a detailed guide for flutists who will play the piece, on how to read notes and techniques in contemporary music writing without difficulty, and how to implement new techniques. It is of great benefit for flutists, especially those at the beginner level, to study contemporary flute techniques and pieces in addition to classical flute methods and exercises. Based on this, it can be said that introducing more contemporary flute works at beginner and intermediate difficulty levels to flute pedagogy and increasing scientific studies in the form of study guides that can guide the reading and playing of written works will be beneficial for performers and the richness of the literature.
