A PROPOSAL FOR TRANSPOSITION PRACTICE ON THE KABAK KEMANE: THE EXAMPLE OF THE KÜRDİ MAKAM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The kabak kemane is a bowed instrument derived from the ıklığ, which originated in Central Asia and has survived to the present day. With the migration of the Turks to Anatolia, this instrument acquired different forms and regional characteristics. Today known as the kabak kemane, it is an important color instrument in Turkish folk music and also stands out as a solo instrument.
Both in academic studies and during performances in settings such as concerts and festivals, the performer may need to transpose instantaneously on the kabak kemane. In this regard, a methodological framework has been developed to explain how transposition is carried out on the kabak kemane.
Due to the predominantly regional performance of folk songs in the practice of the kabak kemane, along with factors such as the lack of methodological sources and the resulting limited need for different tonic pitches, the knowledge and application of transposition have not been able to develop sufficiently. Consequently, this study exemplifies how to perform transposition in 12 different keys on the instrument. Furthermore, it provides a model for transposition practices not only in the Kürdi mode but also in other modal structures.
The study includes schematically drawn kabak kemane fingerboards, the Kürdi makam scale, fingerings, the twelve-key transpositions of the folk song “Karahisar Kalesi,” which reflects the characteristics of the Kürdi makam, as well as relevant exercises.
In this study, a schematic representation of the kabak kemane fingerboard, the kürdi makam scale, fingerings, the 12 tone transposition of the folk song “Karahisar Kalesi” and exercises are presented. The video recordings of the folk songs and exercises performed by the students were sent to three field experts, who evaluated the students’ pre-test and post-test performances using the transposition assessment form prepared by the researcher. Accordingly, data were collected to determine whether the students’ transposition skills on the kabak kemane improved.
