The Mediating Role of Social Media Use in the Relationship between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and Sharing Fake News among University Students

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of FoMO on fake news sharing and the mediating role of social media usage behavior. Today, most people use social media as a way to communicate with
large audiences, show themselves and their lives, or get to know the lives of others. Ease of access to social media offers significant opportunities to people with anxiety and discomfort, such as
FoMO. However, social media also allows for the proliferation of “fake news”, that is, news containing deliberately false information. The low tendency of people to verify online information on social
media increases the sharing of fake news. The results of this research are important in terms of revealing how psychological problems such as FoMO affect the false news sharing behavior, and bringing up-to-date information to the relevant literature in this age where technological tools are gaining stronger influence day by day. Employing quantitative methodology, the data were collected from 388 university students using a face-to-face survey technique. The results show that FoMO has a positive
and significant effect on fake news sharing. The increase in the FoMO level of the participants increases the use of social media. In addition, the use of social media plays a mediator role in the effect
of FoMO on false news sharing behavior.

Üniversite Öğrencileri Arasında Gelişmeleri Kaçırma Korkusu (FoMO) ile Yalan Haber Paylaşımı Arasındaki İlişkide Sosyal Medya Kullanımının Aracılık Rolü

Year 2024, Volume: 14 Issue: 2, 23 - 36, 29.08.2024
https://doi.org/10.53478/yuksekogretim.1277063
