A Comparative Analysis of Academics’ Perceptions of Quiet Quitting in Public and Foundation Universities in Türkiye

Abstract

This study examines the quiet quitting of academics working in the foundation and public universities in Türkiye within the framework of demographic variables and university-type comparison. Quiet quitting is defined as employees continuing their jobs with minimal performance without expressing dissatisfaction with their workload. This phenomenon, which has increased with the COVID-19 pandemic, has caused significant changes in work-life balance and job satisfaction. The research, aimed to obtain in-depth results by comparing and integrating quantitative and qualitative data using a mixed method paradigm. Quantitative data were collected with the “Quiet Quitting Scale” and analyzed in the light of demographic variables. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and analyzed by content analysis method. Research findings indicate significant differences in quiet quitting levels among academics between foundation and public universities, as well as across demographic groups. Key factors contributing to quiet quitting include work-life balance, lack of motivation, academic workload, and management-related challenges. Based on these findings, the study emphasizes the negative effects of the quiet quitting phenomenon on scholarly productivity and job satisfaction in universities, and suggests developing managerial strategies to address this issue, offering guidance to higher education administrators.

Türkiye’de Kamu ve Vakıf Üniversitelerindeki Akademisyenlerin Sessiz İstifa Algıları Üzerine Karşılaştırmalı Bir Analiz

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Türkiye’deki vakıf ve kamu üniversitelerinde görev yapan akademisyenlerin sessiz istifa düzeylerini demografik değişkenler ve üniversite türü karşılaştırması çerçevesinde incelemektedir. Sessiz istifa, çalışanların iş yüklerinden memnuniyetsizliklerini dile getirmeden, minimum performans göstererek işlerini sürdürmeleri olarak tanımlanmaktadır. COVID-19 pandemisi ile artan bu olgu, iş-yaşam dengesi ve iş memnuniyeti konularında önemli değişikliklere neden olmuştur. Araştırmada, karma yöntem paradigması kullanılarak nicel ile nitel verilerin karşılaştırılarak bütünleştirilmesinden derinlemesine sonuçlar elde etmek amaçlanmıştır. Nicel veriler, “Sessiz İstifa Ölçeği” ile toplanmış ve demografik değişkenler ışığında analiz edilmiştir. Nitel veriler ise yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler aracılığıyla elde edilmiş ve içerik analiz yöntemiyle incelenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, akademisyenlerin sessiz istifa düzeylerinin vakıf ve kamu üniversiteleri arasında ve demografik değişkenler bağlamında anlamlı farklılık gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Özellikle iş-yaşam dengesi, motivasyon eksikliği, akademik iş yükü ve yönetim kaynaklı sorunlar sessiz istifayı etkileyen başlıca faktörler olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, sessiz istifa olgusunun üniversitelerdeki akademik üretkenlik ve iş memnuniyeti üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri vurgulanmış ve bu durumun önlenmesi için yönetsel stratejilerin geliştirilmesi gerektiği önerilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın, yükseköğretim yöneticilerine yol gösterici fikirler sunarak literatüre katkı sağlayacağı varsayılmaktadır.
