The Effects of Process of Developing Instructional Materials on Pre-Service Teachers’ Environmental Attitudes, Behaviors and Perceptions
Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of developing instructional materials
from substances waste on pre-service teachers‟ environmental attitudes, behaviors and
perceptions. The study was carried out with 64 primary pre-service science teachers. In line with
the purpose of the present study, the „Environmental Literacy Scale‟ developed by Kışoğlu
(2009) and semi-structured interview protocols was used. In the study, pre-service science
teachers have developed instructional materials compatible with primary science text books. The
research process carried out for 8 weeks in the Fall Term of the 2015-2016 academic year.
Results of study showed that the developing instructional materials with using waste materials
effects pre-service science teachers‟ environmental attitudes, behaviors and perceptions in
positive way. Also, the study revealed that research process had more positive effects on male
pre-service teachers‟ environmental behaviors than female preservice teachers‟. The results of the
study are important in order to develop a more favorable environmental awareness among preservice
science teachers. Parallel to these findings, it is also important that this awareness may
affect reflections of future generations‟ environmental sensitivity in a positive way.
