Abstract

Cathedrals hold a significant place in the Christian world as religious structures that have survived from the Middle Ages to the present day. The tapestries found in these buildings are not only aesthetic decorations but also historical and artistic documents that carry religious, cultural, and social meaning. In this context, beyond adorning places of worship, they contribute to the dissemination of religious teachings and offer important insights into their respective periods. The tapestries in Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como), built in Gothic-Renaissance style in the city of Como, Italy, are remarkable examples in this regard. These textiles are not only artistic elements in harmony with the architecture but also visual documents reflecting the religious and social structure of the Renaissance period. Within this scope, this study summarizes the history of tapestries and examines the artistic, religious, and aesthetic aspects of the tapestries in Como Cathedral. During the research, a literature review was conducted to emphasize the historical and cultural importance of tapestries. Based on the collected data, a descriptive analysis method was employed to interpret the findings, highlighting insights on the evolving nature of representation.

İbadet ve Sanat Arasında: İtalya Como Katedrali’nde Bulunan Tapestryler Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Katedraller, Orta Çağ’dan günümüze ulaşan dini yapılar olarak Hristiyan dünyasında önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Bu yapılarda yer alan tapestreyler de (duvar halıları) yalnızca estetik süslemeler değil aynı zamanda dini, kültürel ve toplumsal açıdan anlam taşıyan tarihsel ve estetik belgelerdir. Bu bağlamda ibadet alanlarını süslemenin yanında dini öğretilerin yayılmasına katkıda bulunur ve kendi dönemlerine dair önemli bilgiler sunarlar. İtalya’nın Como şehrindeki Gotik-Rönesans tarzında inşa edilen Como Katedrali’ndeki (Duomo di Como) tapestreyler, bu açıdan dikkat çekici örneklerdir. Halılar, mimariyle uyumlu sanatsal öğeler olmanın yanında Rönesans Dönemi’nin dini ve toplumsal yapısını yansıtan görsel dokümanlar niteliğindedirler. Bu kapsamda bu çalışmada tapestreylerin tarihçesi özetlenerek Como Katedrali’ndeki halıların sanatsal, dini ve estetik yönleri incelenmiştir. Araştırma esnasında alan yazın taraması ile tapestreylerin tarihsel ve kültürel önemi de vurgulanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda, betimsel analiz yöntemiyle yorumlama yapılmış ve temsiliyetin dönüşen yapısı üzerine çıkarımlarda bulunulmuştur.
