Gendered Traces in Oral Culture: Female Representations in Turkish and Kurdish Proverbs
Abstract
Studies on antiproverbs directed against women warrant serious attention from folklorists, linguists, and literary historians. While such expressions are often regarded as generalisations derived from the daily observations and experiences of earlier generations, their assertions are layered, multifaceted, and frequently as contradictory as life itself. The central argument of this article is that the logical coherence of antiproverbs targeting women is highly questionable, and that a consistent philosophical or rational interpretation is difficult—if not impossible—to sustain. Far from being untouchable cultural relics, many of these expressions are deeply flawed stereotypes rooted in patriarchal norms. One striking example is the Turkish proverb “Kızını dövmeyen, dizini döver” (“He who does not beat his daughter will beat his knee”), which reflects a harmful, authoritarian worldview. While such a claim may have held resonance in preliterate societies, it has no place in literate and socially conscious communities today. Indeed, the message may be more accurately reversed: “Kızını döven, dizini döver” (“He who beats his daughter will beat his knee”). This study undertakes a comparative analysis of well-known antiproverbs from Turkish and Kurdish oral traditions that encode negative and prejudiced representations of women, aiming to uncover the socio-cultural structures that sustain such gendered discourses.
