Determination of Nutritional Habits in İzmir Buca Closed/Open Penal Institution

Abstract

Objective: In the study, it was aimed to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of Izmir Buca Closed / Open Penal Institution prisoners and staff, to determine the habits of consuming main meals and snacks, and to associate this situation with the people thinking that they have a sufficient and balanced diet.
Material and Methods: In this study, the material consists of a total of 486 people including 42 staff and 444 convicts/prisoners, with different demographic characteristics in Izmir Buca Closed/Open Penal Institution and the face to face survey method. Survey questions consist of socio-demographic characteristics, whether they think they have a sufficient and balanced diet and dietary habits. Chi-square test were used to analyze the relationship between different variables depending on eating habits and whether the participants think that they have an adequate and balanced diet.
Results and Conclusion: It was determined that 73.8% of the staff and 68% of the convicts/prisoners did not think that they had a sufficient and balanced diet. 63.2% of the participants stated that they skipped the main meal and the most frequently skipped main meal was breakfast. It was determined that 80.7% of all participants skipped snacks and the most commonly skipped snack was mid-morning. Most of the people participating in the study showed that the reason for skipping snacks was their lack of habits. The relationship between the participants' belief that they have a sufficient and balanced diet and their habits of consuming main meals and snacks was found to be statistically significant. Ensuring adequate nutrition of people in penal institutions and its quality and monitoring play an active role in ensuring peace of mind.
