The Effect of Socio-economic Level on Denver II Test

Abstract

Introduction: Early detections of deviations from normal child development, detection of underly- ing risk factors and early treatment is crucial. In this study, we aimed to assess the development of children by Denver II test and the associated so- cioeconomic factors. Material and methods: A total number of 179 children attending to Zeynep Kamil Maternity and Childrens’ Diseases Training and Research Hospital were included in this study and Denver II Developmental Screening Test was performed. Detailed prenatal, natal and postnatal history was collected. Physical and neurological exami- nations were performed. Socio-economic level of the family and the child’s developmental stages were recorded. Results: The high socioeconomic level was asso- ciated with higher rates of normal Denver scores, early neurodevelopment, higher percentages of being working mother, higher duration of breast- feeding. Children watching television more than two hours had higher incidence of abnormal and suspicious results. There was no statistical differ- ence in Denver scores based on gender (p>0.05). Discussion: : In this study, we found that chil- dren’s socio-economic level greatly affects the test results. Easy modification like; to encourage breastfeeding, the allocation of time to talk to the child, reduction of the child’s television viewing time, reduction of usage of a walker, will positive- ly affect the development of children.

Sosyoekonomik ZKTB Özelliklerin Denver-II Test Performansına Etkisi

Abstract

Amaç: Çocuklardaki normalden sapmaların erken saptanması, altta yatan risk faktörlerinin tanınması ve tedavi programına alınması oldukça önemlidir. Biz bu çalışmada, çocukların gelişimini Denver II ile değerlendirmeyi ve sonuçları et- kileyen sosyoekonomik faktörleri incelemeyi amaçladık. Materyal ve Metod: Çalışmaya Zeynep Kamil Kadın Doğum ve Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi’ne başvuran 179 çocuk alındı ve her çocuğa Türk Çocuklarına Uyarlanmış Denver II Gelişimsel Tarama Tes- ti uygulandı. Tüm olguların ayrıntılı prena- tal, natal ve postnatal öyküleri alındı. Fizik ve nörolojik muayeneleri yapıldı. Ailenin sosyoe- konomik düzeyi ve çocuğun gelişim basamakları sorgulandı. Sonuçlar: Sosyoekonomik düzeyi yüksek olgu- larda Denver II test sonucunun normal çıkma oranı yüksek, çocukların nöromotor gelişiminin daha erken, annelerinin çalışıyor olma oranı yüksek, anne sütü kullanım süresinin daha uzun olduğu saptandı. İki saatten fazla televizyon izley- en olgularda anormal ve şüpheli sonuç görülme oranları yüksekti. Denver sonuçlarına göre ve sosyoekonomik duruma göre cinsiyetler arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık görülmedi (p>0.05). Tartışma: Çocukların Denver test sonuçlarını so- syoekonomik düzeyin büyük oranda etkilediğini saptadık. Anne sütünün teşvik edilmesi, bebeklik döneminde çocuğun sık kucakta taşınması, gün içinde çocukla konuşmak için zaman ayırma, çocuğun TV izleme süresinin azaltılması, yürüteç kullanılmaması, okul çağına gelen çocukların eğitimine önem verilmesi gibi zor olmayacak değişiklikler çocuklarımızın gelişimini olumlu yönde etkileyecektir.
