The prevalence of Insulin resistance and Meta- bolic Sendrome in Obese and Overweight Chil- dren

Abstract

Introduction: Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are recognized as a complication of obesity and are becoming a significant problem in parallel with an increase in obezity. In this article, we aimed to assess overweight and/or obese chil- dren in terms of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Material and methods: A total number of 102 children aged between 6-16 years are included in this study from September 2008 to December 2008. HOMA-IR values have been identified for the diagnosis of insulin resistance. The modified WHO criteria are used for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Results: The overall insidance of insulin re- sistance and metabolic syndrome was %55.8 and %33.3, respectively. Insulin resistance was present in %47.8 of overweight and %58.2 of obese children. Metabolic syndrome was detected in %43.03 of obese children. Discussion: : Childhood obesity is an important a public health problem requiring preventive meas- ures.

Fazla Kilolu ve Obez Çocuklarda İnsülin Direnci ve Metabolik Sendrom Prevalansı

Abstract

Amaç: Obezitenin komplikasyonu olarak ka- bul edilen insülin direnci ve metabolik sendrom, çocukluk çağı obezitesindeki artışa paralel olarak önemli bir sorun haline gelmektedir. Bu makalede fazla kilolu veya obez çocuklar insülin direnci ve metabolik sendrom açısından değerlendirildi. Gereç ve yöntemler: Çalışmamıza Eylül 2008-Aralık 2008 tarihleri arasında yaşları 6 ile 16 arasında değişen toplam 102 çocuk ve adole- san olgu dahil edilmiştir. İnsülin direnci için HO- MA-IR değerleri belirlendi. Metabolik sendrom tanısı için modifiye WHO kriterleri kullanıldı. Bulgular: Tüm bireylerde insülin direnci %55,8 olarak tespit edildi. Fazla kilolularda insülin direnci %47,8 olarak tespit edildi. Obezlerde in- sülin direnci %58,2 oranında tespit edildi. Tüm çocuklarda metabolik sendrom oranı % 33,3 olar- ak tespit edildi. Obez çocuklarda metabolik send- rom %43,03 olarak tespit edildi Sonuç: Çocuklarda obezite, üzerinde durulması gereken ve koruyucu önlemler gerektiren bir halk sağlığı sorunu olduğu aşikardır
