A Comparative Geopolitical Film Analysis on the West's Imagination of the Balkans and the Balkans' Perception of the West

Geopolitics examines how states’ geographical positions, resources, and relations with their environment shape foreign policy and global roles. While classical geopolitics emphasizes physical geography, critical approaches highlight geography’s social and cultural construction. From this view emerge concepts like geopolitical imagination—how regions are perceived and represented—and popular geopolitics, which studies how such representations circulate through media and cinema. The Balkans, long a strategic crossroads, have often been framed negatively by the West. The term “Balkanization” reflects associations with fragmentation and violence, reinforced especially after the 1990s wars, when Western cinema frequently portrayed the region as unstable and requiring external intervention. Media and cinema thus function not only as mirrors of geopolitical thought but also as tools that shape public perception by promoting certain worldviews. This study investigates the geopolitical imagination of the Balkans in cinema through qualitative content analysis. Focusing on Welcome to Sarajevo and No Man’s Land, it examines thematic codes, character portrayals, and narrative structures to uncover their popular geopolitical functions. The findings show how these films construct specific images of the Balkans while simultaneously offering possibilities to question dominant interventionist discourses.
