Prevalence of Postpartum Blues and Associated Factors Among Mothers Attending Family Health Centers

Abstract

Objective: Postpartum blues is a common but often underestimated emotional condition occurring in the early postpartum period. Although usually transient, it may increase the risk of postpartum depression if not recognized. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of postpartum blues and to evaluate its relationship with general health perception and associated sociodemographic, obstetric, and psychosocial factors among mothers attending family health centers. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 139 postpartum women within the first 14 days after delivery who applied to education family health centers in Türkiye. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Postpartum Blues Assessment Scale (PPAS), and the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Statistical analyses included t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. Results: The mean total PPAS score was 49.3 ± 17.6, indicating a moderate level of postpartum blues. According to GHQ-12, 52.5% of participants were classified as high risk for psychological distress. A weak but significant negative correlation was found between the number of live births and PPAS scores (r=–0.27, P=.030). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that living in an extended family (β=0.234, P=.006) and perceived spousal support (β=0.256, P=.002) were independent predictors of postpartum blues, explaining 13.1% of the variance (R²=0.131). Conclusion: Postpartum blues is a multidimensional condition influenced mainly by psychosocial factors rather than obstetric characteristics. Early identification and psychosocial support within primary care services may help prevent progression to more severe postpartum mood disorders.
