Effects of Strontium Ranelate Application on Osseointegration of Implants Without Primary Stability
Abstract
Objectives
This investigation aimed to examine the effect of oral systemic strontium ranelate on the osseointegration of titanium implants placed in rat tibias without primary stabilization. It was hypothesized that strontium ranelate, which has functions similar to those of bisphosphonates (whose effects on bone tissue are known), may increase bone-implant connection (BIC) without primary stabilization.
Materials and Methods
The rats were divided into four coequal groups with 11 rats in each group: a primary stabilization control group (PS+) (n = 11), a strontium ranelate-administered (625 mg/kg) group with primary stabilization (PS+STR) (n = 11), a control group without primary stabilization (PS-) (n=11), and a strontium ranelate administered (625 mg/kg) group without primary stabilization (PS+STR) (n = 11). A 625 mg/kg dose of strontium ranelate was administered daily by means of oral gavage to the experimental groups; no supplemental therapy was provided to the other groups throughout the experiment. At the end of the fourteen-day experimental period, the BIC values of the implants were biomechanically measured using reverse torque analysis.
Results
Lower BIC values were detected in the PS-groups than in the PS+ groups (P < 0.05). The BIC values were higher in the PS(+)-strontium-administered group than in the PS(+) group (P < 0.05). Although strontium administration without primary stability resulted in a numerical increase in BIC values, this difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05).
Conclusion
This study shows that primary stabilization is an important factor for BIC, and it can be concluded that strontium ranelate can increase BIC with primary stabilization.
