OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the sociodemographic characteristics, the type of crime and psychiatric diagnosis of delinguent children. METHODS: The data of 82 delinquent children aged 12-15 years who referred to Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outpatient clinic at Kahramanmaraş and Muğla between January 2012 and 2015 for criminal reports by judicial authority were analysed retrospectively. In all cases, age, gender, educational status, intelligence level, socioeconomical levels, type of crime, re-involvement of criminal activities, the results of forensic reports and psychiatric diagnosis according to DSM-IV-TR classification were evaluated. RESULTS: Majority of the cases were male 87.8% and the mean age of the cases was 13.8±0.92. The 93.9% of the cases had low and moderate socio-economical levels. Intelligence level of the children was found out to be normal in 67.1% of the cases. The most common types of crime were theft 39% and sexual abuse 20.7% . The cases of repetitive offense constituted 12.2% of the cases. In 29.3% of the cases, the children were reported to have sufficiently developed perception and ability that enable them to comprehend the legal meaning and consequences of the offense and to direct his/her behavior accordingly. In most cases there was no psychiatric disorder 62.2% . Conduct disorder 20.7% and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder 13.4% were the common diagnosis among those with psychiatric diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Delinquent children constitute a significant psychosocial problem for both family and the community in our country. Risk factors that increase susceptibility of these children to drift into crime should be identified. In order to prevent the juveniles from drifting into criminal activities, more comprehensive strategies are to be put into practice to find out underlying psychopathologies, treatment of illnesses and rehabilitation along with the family disclosure.
