Conservative treatment approaches in temporomandibular joint disorders: Occlusal splints

Yıl 2011, Cilt: 5 Sayı: 3, 913 - 923, 01.10.2011

Öz

Temporomandibular joint disorder TMD encompasses a number of clinical problems involving the masticatory muscles or the temporomandibular joints. Treatment options for this complex joint can be divided into two as surgical and conservative methods. Various types of occlusal splints have been used for over half a century to treat TMDs in a non-invasive manner, but there has been considerable debate about how they should be designed, how they should be used, and what they actually do therapeutically. Basicly the most common splints for the treatment of TMDs are the stabilization, anterior repositioning, anterior bite plane, posterior bite plane, pivoting and soft or resilient splints. The purpose of this article is to conduct a narrative review of current evidence regarding the understanding of the design and treatment mechanism of different occusal splint types which can be used for the treatment of the TMDs
