Approach To Potentially Malignant Disorders And Suspicious Lesions For Oral Cancer And The Role Of Dentists In Early Diagnosis

According to World Health Organisation’s 1998 report, oral cancer has a very high risk of mortality rate. The reason of high mortality rate of oral cancer is diagnosis at late stage of the disease generally with regional lymph node metastasis and high risk of recurrence despite large surgical treatment. Oral cancer may appear either on normal oral mucosa or from a potentially malignant disorder. Since, all these lesions and early invasive oral cancer is easily visible for dentists, physicians, ear-nosethroat specialist, and even the patient himself, they have the chance to be diagnosed at early stage. This review aimed to highlight the approaches to leukoplakia, erythroplakia and oral cancer as well as modilities in early diagnosis, and responsibility of dentist on this subject
