Osteoporosis and Periodontitis

Osteoporosis and periodontitis are diseases which affect a large number of women and men, witch incidence is increasing with age. Osteoporosis is a systemic disease while periodontitis is a local one. However, these diseases are related as both damage bone tissue and share common risk factors. There is increasing evidence that osteoporosis, and the underlying loss of bone mass characteristic of this disease, is associated with periodontal disease and tooth loss. Many possible factors contribute to the development of osteoporosis and periodontal diseases. Bisphosphonates are very frequently used to relieve patients suffering from various bone diseases, mainly bone metastases and osteoporosis. They have been associated with numerous cases of maxillary and mandibular osteonecrosis. The objective of this article is to review and summarize the published literature on the associations between osteoporosis and periodontitis and also evaluate treatment options about bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaw
