Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and the severity of the apical tooth resorption which occurs during orthodontic treatment. A further aim was to investigate the distribution of the resorptions among tooth groups and the influence of treatment duration, type of treatment and gender on apical root resorption.Material and Method: The materials of this study consisted of the pre- and post treatment digital panoramic radiographs of 120 patients 81 girls, 39 boys . After elimination of 6 radiographs that showed poor image quality on incisor region and 3 removable appliance treatments, the remaining pre- and post treatment radiographs that belong to 111 patients were investigated by the same investigator. All of the permanent teeth except for the third molars were investigated for apical root resoption. The results were evaluated statistically. Results: The apical root resorption was seen most frequently on maxillary central and lateral incisors. The maxillary incisors were followed by the mandibular incisors and the mandibular premolars. No differences for gender and treatment type were found on the apical root resorption incidence in the investigated group. Increase in treatment duration increases the risk for resorption. Conclusion: While the maxillary and the mandibular incisors showed the most frequent rate of apical root resorption, it is recommended to take periapical radiographs from these regions regularly during treatment
