Aim:
To evaluate whether labio-palatal positions of impacted maxillary canines and resorptions of adjacent teeth can be detected with panoramic radiographic parameters and to correlate resorptions with local factors of impacted canines.
Material and Methods:
Panoramic radiography (OPG) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 65 impacted maxillary canines were evaluated retrospectively. Transversal and vertical positions, angles alfa and beta of impacted canines were determined on OPG. Labio-palatal positions of impacted canines, resorptions of adjacent teeth (presence, severity) were investigated on CBCT. Dental follicule of impacted canines (shape, width), proximity to adjacent teeth were also recorded. Data were statistically analyzed (p<0.05).
Results:
Maxillary impacted canines in sector 4, 5 and in coronal zone on OPG were mostly located palatally (p<0.05, p<0.01). All impacted canines related with severe resorption of maxillary centrals were in sector 6 (p=0.001). Impacted canines without resorption of adjacent teeth were mostly detected in coronal zone (p>0.05). Also neither width, shape of dental follicule, nor proximity to adjacent teeth showed relationship with resorption (p>0.05).
Conclusion:
Labio-palatal position of impacted maxillary canines, resorption of adjacent teeth may be predicted by determining transversal and vertical positions on OPG. CBCT must be the choice of imaging when OPG was insufficient.
