Loss of Face Among Undergraduate Students

Öz

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between loss of face, gender, psychological help seeking experience, and gender roles in undergraduate students. Participants consisted of 266 (141 female, 125 male) respondents attending different faculties and departments of a university in the Central Black Sea Region. Result of the independent samples t-tests suggested that women had significantly higher loss of face than men. However, no significant difference was found in loss of face scores with regard to previous psychological help seeking experience. Results of the hierarchical regression analysis suggested that individuals who exhibit high feminine gender roles were more likely to have high level of loss of face after controlling for gender and previous help seeking experience whereas, masculine gender roles were not found to be associated with loss of face. Considering the fact that loss of face is positively correlated with a number of negative mental health indicators, mental health support recommended to women and individuals with high feminine gender roles.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinde Saygınlığını Yitirme Kaygısı

Öz

Bu kesitsel araştırmanın amacı üniversite
öğrencilerinde saygınlığını yitirme kaygısının cinsiyet, psikolojik yardım alma
deneyimi ve cinsiyet rolleriyle ilişkisini incelemektedir. Araştırmanın çalışma
grubunu, Orta Karadeniz Bölgesi’ndeki bir üniversitenin farklı fakülte ve
bölümlerine devam etmekte olan 266 (141 kadın, 125 erkek) katılımcı
oluşturmuştur. Gerçekleştirilen bağımsız örneklemler için t-testi sonucunda,
kadınların saygınlığını yitirme kaygısının erkeklerden anlamlı bir şeklide daha
yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Ancak, daha önce psikolojik yardım alan ve daha önce
psikolojik yardım almayan bireylerin saygınlığını yitirme kaygısı puanları
anlamlı bir farklılık göstermemektedir. Gerçekleştirilen hiyerarşik regresyon
analizi sonucunda ise katılımcıların cinsiyetleri ve daha önce psikolojik
yardım alma deneyimleri kontrol edildiğinde, kadınsı cinsiyet rollerine yüksek
düzeyde sahip bireylerin saygınlığını yitirme kaygısının da yüksek düzeyde
olduğu bulunmuştur. Ancak, erkeksi cinsiyet rolleri saygınlığını yitirme
kaygısıyla ilişkili değildir. Saygınlığını yitirme kaygısının, bir dizi olumsuz
ruh sağlığı göstergesiyle pozitif yönde ilişkili olduğu düşünüldüğünde
kadınların ve kadınsı cinsiyet rolüne sahip olan bireylerin ruh sağlıkları
açısından desteklenmeye ihtiyaçları olduğu söylenebilir.
