The Role of Social Entrepreneurs and Sustainability in Malaysia: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Social entrepreneurship is crucial in addressing societal challenges while ensuring social business sustainability. However, the performance of social entrepreneurs in achieving sustainable social business remains a key concern, particularly in Malaysia. This scoping review explores the factors influencing social entrepreneurs’ performance in sustaining their ventures. Following the PRISMA methodology and Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, a systematic review of the literature was conducted across ProQuest One Business, JSTOR, and Semantic Scholar databases. A total of 336 articles published between 2020 and 2025 were initially identified. After screening for relevance, language, and full-text availability, 14 articles were eligible for data extraction, with only four studies meeting the final inclusion criteria. The findings highlight key themes such as financial management, stakeholder collaboration, innovation, and policy support as crucial determinants of sustainable social entrepreneurship. This review provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers, offering a foundation for future strategies to enhance the sustainability of social business in Malaysia.
