This article examines the role of family structure and functions in the emergence of criminal behavior from criminological and sociological perspectives. Within the frameworks of social control, learning, labeling, and strain theories, the family is analyzed as both a source of risk and a protective factor. The study discusses how factors such as fragmented families, parental loss, domestic violence, neglect, and abuse increase the likelihood of delinquency among children and adolescents. It also emphasizes how socioeconomic disadvantages including poverty, unemployment, and migration undermine family functioning and reinforce crime-related processes. Mechanisms of intergenerational transmission of crime are evaluated, highlighting the lasting impact of parental criminal history on children. Findings reveal that the family can serve both as a generator of risk and as a preventive institution. The article argues that strengthening families through parenting education, holistic support, and early intervention programs should be central to crime prevention and public security policies.
