The Sustainable Transformation of Post-Disaster Container Settlements in Türkiye Through the Adaptive Reuse Approach

Öz

This study examines container settlements constructed in Türkiye following the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes not merely as temporary shelter solutions, but as transformable and sustainable urban living environments in the long term. The main objective of the research is to define design and planning principles that enable the conversion of post-disaster temporary building stock into socially, economically, and culturally multifunctional spaces through the adaptive reuse approach. A qualitative research methodology was adopted, including a review of architecture, urban planning, and sustainability literature, followed by case study analyses of Boxpark (UK), ReTuna (Sweden), Wikkelhouse (the Netherlands), and KODA by Kodasema (Estonia). These examples were evaluated in terms of reuse strategies, spatial flexibility, user profiles, and sustainability criteria. Based on the findings, a flexible container settlement model is proposed, incorporating central, linear, and clustered settlement scenarios adaptable to Türkiye’s climatic and topographical conditions. The study demonstrates that container settlements can be enriched with educational, commercial, cultural, and social functions, enabling their transformation into permanent urban areas. Furthermore, the research emphasizes sustainable planning approaches in post-disaster reconstruction and contributes to long-term spatial resilience strategies while addressing a significant gap in the existing literature.
