Disaster Management Skills Scale Development Study for Schools

Öz

This research aimed to psychometrically validate an instrument, based on teachers’ perspectives, to assess the disaster management skills of school administrators. The study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches. During the qualitative phase, literature and documents on school-based disaster management were analyzed through document analysis to generate an initial item pool. These items were evaluated by experts for content validity and refined through a pilot study. The quantitative phase involved independent samples of teachers from school settings in Elazığ. Specifically, data from 301 teachers were used for the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), while responses from another 300 were analyzed through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The EFA results identified a four-factor structure consisting of 28 items: Risk Reduction, Pre-Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response, and Post-Disaster Recovery. This structure was tested using the independent sample for construct validity. The CFA findings indicated that the proposed model demonstrated high goodness-of-fit indices. Ultimately, the findings suggest the Disaster Management Skills for Schools is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing school administrators’ competencies, providing a useful tool for educational research and professional practice.
