A rare cause of the chronic diarrhea in geriatric patients: Vitamin D deficiency

Öz

Chronic diarrhea is a common disease in geriatric patients. Many causes are blamed for its etiology such as medications, infections, inflammatory bowel disease and malignancies. Chronic diarrhea-malabsorption coexistence is frequently observed and consequently deficiencies of some vitamins and minerals accompany the picture. Vitamin D deficiency is also common in the geriatric patient population, especially in elderly nursing homes. Although these two conditions are seen together, vitamin D deficiency is mostly a result of chronic diarrhea. Besides the well-known effects of vitamin D deficiency on bone metabolism and calcium homeostasis, it has been found to be associated with many chronic diseases such as malignancy, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, infectious and autoimmune diseases. However, there are not much studies in the literature showing that vitamin D deficiency can cause chronic diarrhea.
