A celiac patient presenting with hyperamylasemia: A case report

Celiac disease, also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is characterized by inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa that results from a genetically based immunologic intolerance to ingested gluten. Amylase often increases in acute pancreatitis and salivary inflammation. Amylase elevation in celiac disease is not to be expected. We report a celiac patient who presented with elevated amylase levels. Because the amylase decreased with a gluten-free diet, we believe celiac disease may have been the cause of the amylase elevation in this patient.
