Examining University Students’ Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy in terms of Career Calling and Career Locus of Control

Öz

The purpose of this research is to investigate the role of career calling and career locus of control in predicting university students’ career decision self-efficacy. There were 472 students (282 female, 190 male) who were continuing their undergraduate education at a state university. Data were collected through Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form, Career Calling Scale, Career Locus of Control Scale and Personal Information Form in an online platform. Stepwise regression analysis was used for analyzing data. In line with the results of analysis, it was determined that in predicting career decision self-efficacy, “career calling” took place on the top, followed by “internal locus of control” and “helplessness” which are sub-dimensions of Career Locus of Control Scale. It was observed that “chance” and “powerful others”, which are the other sub-dimensions of Career Locus of Control Scale and in which career-related outcomes are attributed to the chance factor and important others, were not significant predictors. The findings of the study showed that university students with high career calling, internal locus of control and low level of helplessness felt themselves more competent in making a career decision. These findings were discussed in the light of the literature, and suggestions were offered for future research.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Kariyer Kararı Yetkinlik Beklentilerinin Kariyer Arzusu ve Kariyer Denetim Odağı açısından İncelenmesi

Öz

: Bu araştırmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin kariyer arzusu ve kariyer denetim odağının kariyer kararı yetkinlik beklentilerini yordama gücünün incelenmesidir. Araştırmaya, bir devlet üniversitesinde lisans eğitimine devam eden 472 öğrenci (282 kız, 190 erkek) katılmıştır. Veriler, Kariyer Kararı Yetkinlik Beklentisi Ölçeği-Kısa Formu, Kariyer Arzusu Ölçeği, Kariyer Denetim Odağı Ölçeği ve araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan Kişisel Bilgi Formu ile çevrimiçi ortamda toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde, aşamalı regresyon analizi kullanılmıştır. Analiz sonuçları doğrultusunda, kariyer kararı yetkinlik beklentisini ilk sırada yordayan değişkenin “kariyer arzusu” olduğu, bunu sırasıyla Kariyer Denetim Odağı Ölçeği’nin alt boyutlarından olan “iç denetim odağı” ve “çaresizlik” değişkenlerinin takip ettiği belirlenmiştir. Kariyer Denetim Odağı Ölçeği’nin diğer alt boyutları olan ve kariyere ilişkin çıktıların şans faktörüne ve önemli diğer kişilere atfedildiği “şans” ve “güçlü diğerleri” değişkenlerinin ise anlamlı yordayıcılar olmadığı görülmüştür. Çalışmanın bulguları, kariyer arzusu yüksek, kariyerine ilişkin iç denetim odağına sahip ve çaresizlik düzeyi düşük olan üniversite öğrencilerinin bir kariyer kararı verme konusunda kendilerini daha yetkin hissettiklerini göstermiştir. Elde edilen bu bulgular literatür ışığında tartışılmış ve gelecekte yapılacak araştırmalar için öneriler sunulmuştur.
