Therapeutic benefits of nature exposure on human health and mental well-being

Öz

Background and Aims Nature contact offers society physiological and psychological benefits, thereby promoting natural environment conservation; however, in Nigeria, little to no attention has been given to nature's impact on human health and mental well-being. Methods To address this gap, this paper conducted a scoping review by purposively selecting 17 accessible online papers, reports, and literatures based on their relevance; and by extracting and synthesizing key descriptive findings such as summary statistics, means, and standard deviations. Results The review revealed that direct contact with nature for 15 minutes and above significantly reduced average systolic blood pressure [-3.82 (-6.77, -0.86)] and diastolic blood pressure [-2.21 (-3.93, -0.49)] at 95% confidence intervals, lowered mean cortisol concentration from 9.70 to 8.37 nmol/L, decreased average pulse rate from 74.2±1.2 to 72.4±1.1, and improved psychological well-being with 54% of participants feeling more relaxed and less stressed compared to only 10% experiencing no mood change. Conclusion Overall, the findings demonstrate that natural environments effectively enhance both physical health and psychological well-being, ultimately improving the overall quality of human life.
