Aspect-related differences in topsoil properties: A case study in the Limne River Basin (Tekirdağ, Türkiye)

Öz

Background and aims This study compared the properties of 0–20 cm topsoil between elevation-matched north- and south-facing hillslopes in the Limne River Basin. Methods Twenty composite samples were collected from ten matched blocks and analyzed for particle-size distribution, pH, soil organic matter (SOM), electrical conductivity (EC), and calcium carbonate equivalent (CCE). Differences were evaluated using exact paired randomization tests, bootstrap confidence intervals, effect sizes, and Holm correction. Results North-facing sites had less sand (43.87% vs. 54.51%; adjusted p = 0.035) and more silt (32.78% vs. 21.09%; adjusted p = 0.014) and SOM (7.59% vs. 4.48%; adjusted p = 0.039). The clay, pH, EC, and CCE levels did not differ significantly. Seven northern samples were loam and three were clay loam, whereas seven southern samples were sandy clay loam, and the others were sandy loam, loam, and clay loam. Conclusions The hillslopes differed in particle-size distribution, textural-class distribution, and SOM; however, because vegetation, slope gradient, and potentially lithology also varied, the results were not interpreted as the independent causal effect of aspect.
